Squirrels in the Attic: Fort Collins, Colorado

Any of the six species of squirrel found in Colorado can try to live in your house, but that doesn't mean you need to tolerate them. People sometimes accidently encourage the squirrels by feeding them, or allowing them to feed at bird feeders, only to discover that they take up residence in their attics and cause sometimes unexpected damage.

For example, there is a home in Fort Collins that had a squirrel problem. They knew the animals were living in the attic, but didn't worry about it too much. They are cute, and the noise didn't really bother them, and it had to be better than rats or something really nasty, right? Wrong!

When they turned on the heat last fall, the furnace didn't work. When the heating and air guy showed up and started to work on the furnace he found that the cold air return duct was blocked by dead squirrels and their nesting materials. Not only had the furnace not been working correctly for some time and posed a carbon monoxide danger, but the bacteria from decaying bodies circulated through the home. I do not know why it didn't smell, or they didn't notice, but that was what was going on.

Apparently a squirrel had gnawed through the flexible fabric air ducts, decided to build a nest and have babies and then at some point was asphyxiated.

After the rather expensive furnace repair was completed, the homeowner decided it was time to get rid of squirrels. He located an animal control technician using our directory. The technician, Maria, evaluated his problem, identified access points, trapped the squirrels and took them away.

Of course there was a lot more mess than just the furnace, but the technicians were able to clean that up, too. The homeowner was amazed at the amount of damage in the attic—insulation contaminated and urine soaked, chewed duct work, chewed wiring (it is a wonder they didn't have a fire, too.). How could such cute little creatures tear up so much stuff? Well, squirrels are rodents and their behavior and damage are very like rats. Cute or not, you don't want them in your house.

We solve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Fort Collins and surrounding areas. Give us a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

Many of the projects we solve involve raccoon families in attics and chimneys, mud swallow nests on stucco, woodpeckers drilling siding, voles and gophers destroying lawns, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, bat infestations, skunks stealing pet food and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their noise and commotion and smell. Baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? We have seen much, much more than these problems, but that is a general idea of the kinds of problems that my professional wildlife removal operators and I are prepared to solve.

Not only do my technicians and I trap and remove problem wild animals, we do a lot of other dirty work, too. Don't hesitate to call us for dead animal removal, pigeon waste cleanup, bat guano removal, mouse droppings, decontamination, repairs, above ground and below ground rodent slick fencing, odor control for skunk spray, and the like. We are a full service pest control company with a wide range of animal control solutions.

I have been in the professional wildlife control business for many years. My favorite stories and experiences are removing bats from schools and churches.

Big Brown Bats in Fort Collins, CO

Big Brown Bats are the most common of the seven species of Bat found in the Fort Collins, Colorado area. This is based on the frequency of animals submitted to state and local public health agencies to be tested for rabies and on studies conducted by Colorado State University. Fort Collins provides perfect habitat: it is located in a river valley; there are a lot of insects; the temperatures are favorable; and urban development has created new potential roosting sites. While many species suffer when man moves in, building in the prairie gives big brown bats, new opportunities to expand their territory.

The humans benefit from the bats who are active insectivores and pollinators, but the relationship isn't all positive. Female big brown bats actively seek warm places to roost and raise their young. Houses and attics are perfect. People in the Fort Collins, Colorado area need to be especially alert for signs these animals are moving into their homes or businesses.

Bats are valuable in the ecosystem, but they are also known carriers of a wide and growing number of infectious agents, most commonly rabies. People should assume that every Big Brown Bat is a carrier of disease. Be very careful to avoid contact. If contact has occurred, even if you do not believe you have been bitten, the bat should be safely captured and reported to health officials.

You can more fully avoid contact with these animals if you do not harbor them on your property. There are numerous natural nesting sites available in the canyons and safer artificial sites in urban areas, such as bridges, that are less likely to endanger humans and domestic animals. If you do have these animals on your property, or suspect you might, you need a bat removal specialist who can safely and humanely exclude the bats and encourage them to find new homes. Find a specialist at www.AllstateAnimalControl.com. You will find a directory of experts who can provide the help you need.
